Requirements for the Sacrament of Confirmation 2022-2023
As a candidate for confirmation, you are responsible to complete the following requirements:
A. Initiation: The Sacrament of Confirmation completes the process of initiation, which began when you were baptized. Through the Eucharist Jesus, the Blood of Life spiritually nourishes us. In Confirmation we confirm the gift of faith we already have by becoming a true witness to Christ and His Church. If you were not baptized, or did not receive your First Communion at Sacred Heart, you must submit a copy of these certificates to Sue Lubarsky no later than Sunday, November 20,2022.
B. Statement of Intention: Type a one-page letter stating your intention and reason for wanting to receive the Sacrament of Confirmation and submit it to Sue Lubarsky no later than Sunday, December 11, 2022.
C. Confirmation Name: You will be asked to pick your Confirmation name. This may be a name taken from the Old or New Testament or your may wish to retain your given or Baptismal name. There is more to it than just choosing a name. The choosing of a specific name is a significant action; it symbolizes a new start whereby you try to imitate the qualities or virtues of the person whose name you have chosen. You must do the following: 1) Choose a Saint’s name. 2) Do some research on the name you have chosen. 3) Write a biography of the individual. 4) Discuss why you chose the name and how that person’s life applies to you. Submit this one-page typed paper to Sue Lubarsky no later than Sunday, January 29,2023. D. Sponsor & Sponsor Certificates: It is necessary for each candidate to have a sponsor on the day of Confirmation. Since Confirmation completes the initiation process begun at Baptism, it is desirable that the one who undertook the role of sponsor or godparent at Baptism be your sponsor for Confirmation. If this is not possible, then choose a person who has been an example to you, who has led you to this day of Confirmation, and demonstrates qualities of strong Christian living. Sponsor Certificates and Sponsor Papers dueSunday, February 5,2023.
Sponsor Certificate To be admitted to the role of sponsor a person must: 1) have completed the 16th year; 2) be a confirmed Catholic who receives the Eucharist and leads a life in keeping with the Catholic faith; and 3) has not been remarried outside the Catholic Church. Note: both grandparents are acceptable; a sponsor cannot be father or mother of the one to be confirmed. Sponsor Paper: Whomever you choose, make sure you give the decision some thought. Type a one-page paper giving the full name, and the reasons for choosing that person. Submit the paper to Sue Lubarsky no later than Sunday, February 5, 2023. E. Community Service Project: As witnesses to the Christian Life, those who are baptized are called to follow Christ and his loving style of service to others. Type a one-page paper describing your service to your church or community and submit it to Sue Lubarsky no later than Sunday, April 2, 2023.
You are required to do 10 hours of Community Service and 5 hours of Church service, as a Collector, Greeters, or Lector.
F. Retreat: All Confirmation students are required to attend the retreat. Attendance is Mandatory. TBD
